In the past few decades there has been a growing tendency to learn foreign languages. It is hard to find a young person who is not learning at least one or two foreign languages at the moment. Why do we feel we need to know other languages?
Speaking someone elses language enables us to communicate with them. This means better job opportunities (we can search for jobs in other countries) but also better day-to-day relations, for example: buying food in a store during a skiing trip to Italy or talking to your mother-in-law, that is, if you happened to marry someone with a different mother tongue. Researchers are finding it easier to discuss their studies when using the same language, not needing the help of a translator.
One language spoken worldwide would lead to better relations among normal people, which would lead to overall better international relations.
However, a language spoken by only a certain group of people gives a sense of unity between the members of this group. Somehow it feels better to be one-of-a-few-thousand than one-of-six billion people who know this language: it makes you and other members of this group feel unique, more close to each other, because you can talk to each other in a way that others do not understand, and gives a feeling of belonging.
In my opinion people should learn other languages, because it leads to better worldwide relations, but they should not ignore their own mother tongue.
